Italy beat North Macedonia 5-2 at the Olympic Stadium in Rome this Friday (17), in the penultimate round of the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
Luciano Spalletti’s team achieved victory in the first half: Matteo Darmian opened the scoring in the 17th minute; Jorginho misses a penalty in the 40th; Federico Chiesa scored two goals in the 41st and 47th minutes and the Azzurri went into half-time leading 3-0.
North Macedonia reacted and scored a brace through Jani Atasanov in the 7th and 29th minutes of the second half, reducing the score to 3-2.
Italy then attacked again and closed the match 5-2 with goals from Giacomo Raspadori in the 36th minute and Stephen El Shaarawy in the 48th minute of the final phase.
The North Macedonia team defeated Italy in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers and had drawn in the first match between the two teams in these European Championship qualifiers on September 9.
With this result, Italy moves up to second place in Group C of the Qualifiers with 13 points and will play for a draw in next Monday’s direct clash (20th) against Ukraine to play next year’s European Championship in Germany.
Ukraine also has 13 points, but loses to Italy on goal difference.
England, leaders with 19 points, are already classified.
The match between Ukrainians and Italians will take place on Tuesday at 4.45pm (Brasilia time).
The match will take place in Leverkusen, as the Ukrainian team has adopted Germany as their home since the Russian invasion made it impossible to hold matches in Ukraine. Whoever loses will still be able to compete in the repechage.
Italy is the current champion of the European Championship. Germany, the host country, has already qualified for the tournament, as have teams from Scotland, Spain, France, England, Turkey, Albania, Belgium, Austria, Hungary, Denmark, Portugal and Slovakia.
The competition will be played by 24 countries between 14 June and 14 July, in ten German cities. .
