“President Lula will not make this choice (…). We must rethink our development, we cannot be so dependent on a bilateral relationship,” he said in an interview with Uol.
The minister stressed that Brazil is not choosing an economic block. “Brazil knows that, to develop, it needs good commercial agreements with Asia, good commercial agreements with Europe and a lot with the United States,” said Finance Minister.
He said that the conversation with the US Treasury Secretary Scott Besent was very frank and polite, attacking the most delicate topics. Haddad recalled, however, that negotiations with Donald Trump’s government are conducted by the vice -president and minister of the Gerald Alfine sector.
Speaking of the topics brought to the meeting with Beesent, Haddad repeated that South America is lacking in commercial relations with the United States. “How do you evaluate a region that is lacking? From an economic point of view, it makes no sense. E (Bessent) Recognized when I said this and said: “Look, we will embark on, we will sit at the table to negotiate,” said the minister. “From my point of view, the United States should look more generously in Latin and South America America. And Brazil, from my point of view, is doing the right policy”, added Haddad, who also asked for a more strategic look at the continent.
The largest economy in the world, underlined the owner of the farm, has a lot to obtain from the largest regional balance and development in South America. By strengthening that the Brazilian government will not choose a part in the commercial war, Haddad has recalled that China is the largest commercial partner in Brazil, while the United States dominate cutting technology. Therefore, the minister underlined, the two partnerships are fundamental for the development of Brazil.
The minister reiterated the message that President Lula believes in multilateralism and stressed that the president has open doors to negotiate abroad. “It is seen all over the world as a true democratic. He is a person who was born from the fight against dictatorship, he won three democratically elections, he recognized all the results when he lost, he played fairly for life and has the doors open all over the world. Perhaps they are the few sovereigns who have open doors in all the quadrants of the world,” said Haddad. The minister also underlined in the interview that Brazil is in a geopolitical situation which, if used well, can favor the country.
“Irregular” politics
Haddad has assessed that American commercial policy, which has classified as “irregular”, derives from an uncomfortable American with globalization and an attempt to correct historical macroeconomic imbalances.
“The United States have promoted a lot with globalization. There is no doubt: if you get a per capita American income, if you get compared to growth and Europe, the United States have benefited from globalization. But China could benefit much more than the United States,” he said.
“This generates discomfort in a country that until the other day faced the Soviet Union and then faced Japan and has won, so to speak, both. Now it has a greater challenge,” added the minister.
Citing a historical imbalance, which has worsened over time, Haddad has said that the United States are trying to find a way to rebalance some important macroeconomic variables, such as an external deficit and high interest rates.
“This is a bit about the life of the Americans and I think they are looking for their way, a little irregular, I would say, but they are looking for a way to rebalance their bills,” he said.
