Hunger Games 5: We explain the ending of the 2023 movie

Warning – This article contains spoilers for the ending of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay.

Currently in our theaters, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of the Snake and the Bird, adapted from the 2020 novel by Suzanne Collins, is a prequel to the saga, directed by Jennifer Lawrence.

The story takes place 64 years before Katniss’ adventures. Young Coriolanus, played by Briton Tom Blyth, is the last hope of his lineage. The once wealthy and proud Snow family has now fallen from grace in the post-war Capitol.

As the 10th Hunger Games approaches, he is reluctantly tasked with mentoring Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zeigler), a tribute from District 12, the poorest and most hated of Panem.

With Lucy Gray’s voice captivating the public, Snow sees an opportunity to change their fate and join forces with her to turn fate in their favor.

As the film progresses, the character of Coriolanus becomes more refined and we begin to unravel the complex personality of the future President of the Capitol. At the end of the feature film, when Snow, who has become a peacemaker, is about to escape with Lucy Gray Baird, the latter realizes that he is part of the rebellion and the trust of the young woman for whom he wrote the song. The “hanging tree” disappears.

While they are hiding in a cabin in the woods, Lucy pretends to go pick up Katniss to escape alone. Snow then heads off to find the young woman. Coriolanus shoots in her direction, but we don’t see his body. Is Lucy Gray Baird dead or has she escaped? And if so, wouldn’t he be Katniss’s ancestor?

Could Lucy be Katniss’ ancestor?

Although Everdeen is not mentioned and Katniss never mentions any family members older than her parents, fans have speculated that she is related to Lucy Gray Bird.

Rachel Zegler

Lucy is from District 12 and is part of Covey’s singing group. It’s about a musical group that traveled to Panem and found themselves trapped in District 12.

Katniss’s father often sang and was known for his voice, and it was he who passed on the songs written by Lucy to his daughter. So it is possible that the latter was part of the Covey in his youth, or that Lucy is his mother and therefore Katniss’ grandmother. Which would have strong symbolism given her relationship with Snow.

Are other films being considered to connect The Serpent of the Balla and Songbird to the previous saga?

Any sequels planned?

To this day, the continuation of the story has not been written Susan Collins. Producer Nina Jacobson, who oversaw all five films in the saga, told the site polygon that he would only make a new film if Susan Collins had something new to say.

Lucy and Coriolanus

If Collins has a story to learn from this world, then that’s great. But if it doesn’t, it’s better to leave this franchise as something people will remember fondly than make a sequel for the sake of a sequel.

The comments agree with recent statements by the director who explained the site EW : “If Susan has another thematic idea that she thinks fits the world of Panem — whether it’s new characters or familiar ones like Katniss, Finnick, Haymitch or anyone else — I’ll be there to make them fit on screen.”

But I’m not going to just say yes, it, like previous films, should have thematic underpinnings that make the story worthwhile..”

Therefore, it is still unknown whether the adventures of young Coriolanus and Lucy are planned to continue. Everything will depend on Susan Collins, but also on the box office of this fifth opus.
