But it was her role in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds that really turned her career around.
However, nothing defined Melanie Laurent as Shosanna Dreyfus except her incredible determination. Thus, the actor did not hesitate to participate in the casting of the film, despite the fact that he did not match the profile required by the American filmmaker.
Melanie Laurent returned to the set of the talk show Tonight with Arthur “lie” which allowed him to land the lead role in Inglourious Basterds. “I did a complete fraud” reveals the latter, who admits that he pretended to be bilingual during the audition, when in fact he only spoke a few words of English!
To maintain the illusion, the French actor learned the text of the script by heart, and then he was satisfied “Yes” and nodding his head every time the principal spoke to him. Still, the truth almost came out when Melanie Laurent was invited to dinner by Tarantino, but luckily it wasn’t.
