Robert Pattinson almost never got the male lead in the Twilight saga, just because of his looks! He also faced big names who would take his place; The competition was very tough to participate in this literary bestseller with almost guaranteed success!
Interview in the podcast watchThe director of the first film, Catherine Hardwicke, went back to her first meeting with Robert Pattinson, and obviously, for the actor… nothing was won!
When he arrived at my house he had black locks and was not in great physical shape as he spent all his time in the pub. I thought, “It works in real life and it works on screen,” but I had to be sure. Of course, he accepted me as a person, but I had to be sure that he would welcome me on screen.
The director auditioned the actor with Kristen Stewart, with whom the chemistry was instant, even after Robert Pattinson recognized GQ that he was on valium during this first meeting. Either way, he’s getting his scenes, and Hardwicke should have the studio vindicated by his casting choices:
Robert Pattinson “Twilight, Chapter 1”
“I sent them to Summit and met with them. They called me and said, ‘Do you think you can make him look good?’ Full make-up including hair, he’s going to work out and he looks great. But at first they didn’t believe him, he went there with a spotted T-shirt… It was Rob.”
The change paid off as Pattinson played Edward in five Twilight films. The somewhat “emo” image that he retained long after Saga ended did not prevent him, with his daring artistic choices, from emerging and making a dozen independent films since then.
He is also the new Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ Batman, whose second opus is currently in development and is slated for release in 2025.
