“Film Over 600 Kilometers”: Robin Williams’ Improvisations on Mrs. Doubtfire You’ll Never Imagine

Robin Williams, who died tragically almost 10 years ago, was not an actor like any other. Able to explore all registers and master them to perfection, he was particularly generous in the areas of comedy and improvisation, which he especially proved by recording tens of hours of rushes when he dubbed the unforgettable Genie from Aladdin.

While Madam Doubtfire – which starred Robin Williams as a divorced father who disguised himself as an Irish governess to spend more time with his children – recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, director Chris Columbus recently opened up about his memories of making the film. Business Insider.

The filmmaker especially returned to the extraordinary work technique of his main actor and the many hours of improvisation he offered:

“Very early on, he came to me and said, ‘Hey, boss, if you don’t mind, I like to work like this: I give you three or four takes that fit the script, and then we have fun.

His intention in saying this was to improvise. And that’s exactly how we shot all the scenes. We were shooting exactly what we wrote, and then Robin got mad and it was worth watching.”

Sometimes, as Columbus also explained during the interview, Robin Williams’ incredible imaginations required the team to demonstrate a real sense of adaptation:

“It got to such proportions that I had to shoot the whole film with four cameras to track it”– explained the director still at the microphone Business Insider.

“None of us knew what he was going to say when he started, so I wanted the camera on the other actors to capture their reactions. It was very difficult for Pierce Brosnan and Sally Field not to step out of character.”

Revealing that a sequel was under consideration before the actor’s death (the latter also found the script very effective, but wanted to spend less time than the first time in the costume of Madame Doubtfire), Chris Columbus also admitted that he really wanted to draw a line. “We want to show how Robin does it. There’s something special and magical about his work and I think it would be fun to delve into that. There’s more to it than that. 600 Kilometers film In this warehouse, so perhaps there is something to be done about all this.’
