“It was pure instinct,” says the Brazilian who prevented the attack on a school in Ireland

Caio Benício when he saw the attacker stab a girl of about five years old.

Brazilian delivery driver Caio Benício, 43, recalled what led him to stop stabbing attack which injured five people, including three children. this Thursday the 23rd in Dublin, Ireland. According to Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, the man suspected of committing the crime has been arrested.

In an interview with the international newspaper, The newspaper, Caio was working on his motorbike when he saw a man attack a victim with a knife in Parnell Square East, a busy square in a residential area in central Dublin. The Brazilian immediately got out, took off his helmet and hit the attacker with it.

“I didn’t even make a decision, it was pure instinct and everything was over in a few seconds. He fell to the ground, I didn’t see where the knife ended up and other people intervened,” said Caio. “I also have two kids, so I had to do something. I did what anyone would do. People were there but couldn’t intervene because they were armed, but I knew I could use my helmet as a weapon.”

According to him, it was the five-year-old girl, who he saw brutally attacked, that he continued to think about after the incident. “I’m praying, I’m just thinking about this. I saw her in the ambulance, she looked so vulnerable. I await news about her. I’m waiting,” he said.

Gaius regretted it, stating that he could have been quicker to stop the attack. “If a child hadn’t survived, I would always think he could have been faster. I recently had knee surgery, it slowed me down getting off the bike, could it have been faster?,” he reflected.

“If all the victims survive, I will be grateful to be in the right place at the right time,” he says. He recalls that even an employee of the school, who was with the children, tried to do everything possible to protect them.

Scary moments

After all the scare, Benício reports that he was exhausted and spent the rest of the day full of adrenaline. According to him, he doesn’t even know where his motorbike is, because he left it there, but he is not worried about this, but about the victims. “Now I remember everything in flashes. It seemed like it was all over in seconds,” he said.

Caio says he went to Ireland to work after his restaurant caught fire in Brazil and hopes to take his children there one day. However, he regrets the anti-immigration sentiments expressed by far-right Irish protesters.

“They seem to hate immigrants. Well, I’m an immigrant and I did what I could to try to save that girl,” she said.

Irish repercussions

Caio’s attitude was recognized by the MMA fighter Conor McGregorwho considered the Brazilian a “true hero”.
