Is Mars Express a good movie? The first viewers to express their opinion

The title Mars Express will be familiar to those who followed the recent Annecy International Animation Film Festival from afar. Although he did not leave the feature film Crystal, the most important prize of the event, which was presented to Linda Chicken, it is one of the opus that left the biggest impression.

Directed by Jeremy Perrin, who wrote several episodes of the Lastman series, this ultra-generous and referenced animated and sci-fi film takes us to Mars in the year 2200 during an investigation led by a detective and his android partner. In a city where danger lurks around every corner. But what do viewers say about it?

With an average score of 4 out of 5 (same press) thanks to the 118 people who rated it, this makes it one of the twenty best movies coming out in 2023 (with the same score as The Three Musketeers or Dry Herbs, for example). And in terms of animation alone, it’s currently between Elementary’s 3.9 and Super Mario Bros.’s 4.1.

They liked it

“Damn, what a monumental slapstick, one of the best adult animated films of the last 10 years”calls out Francois Lwho admits that he does not believe this and gives the maximum score out of 5. Having already been impressed with the team’s previous works (including Lastman), this netizen has not been disappointed by their passage to the big screen in what he considers to be. More than successful. “The animation and aesthetics are top-notch, the dialogue is whip-lashing, biting, cynically funny, superbly voiced.”

Ambition and animation quality are two terms that often come up among the most excited viewers. as Alex Hamdan (5 stars) that speaks “Pure pleasure for the eyes and ears”but Philip Christine Gives it the same rating and notes “Many great finds” and Moviegoers 44 (4 stars) Welcome “Unified Paw” with which the film deals with classic science fiction themes.

Kivodulh (4.5 out of 5) goes in the same direction and is excited about it Never seen before, Mars Express brings its share of highly creative ideas.. And the nationality of the film is also seen as an asset: “We can only encourage this type of effort” for that Larbin D (5 stars), about it “A French animated film that surprised me with big hits”Shout it loud and clear Leo DESS (5 stars too), highlighting the quality of the dubbing, another strong point that comes up regularly.

“In recent years, dubbing has often been penalized by the inclusion of a title to ensure promotion, which almost invariably undermines the work itself, where it ultimately stops.”exact Oooooooooo (4.5 stars, 5.5 less than it is “oh” in his nickname).

Finally, the very topical subjects discussed in the story, and artificial intelligence in particular, add some depth to the plot: “The story is relevant, but the ending leaves us wanting more”specifies (and regrets) M_wombat (3 stars), we are talking about A “A hit animated film made for the international market.”

They didn’t like it

“It’s good, but it’s not a workplace”statement from the beginning my lord (3 stars) for whom Mars Express does not reach Akira’s power. That doesn’t stop him from praising the hard work put in and the food for thought the whole thing offers. Shawn777 (2 stars) Not sure about this movie “which struggles greatly to captivate its audience”Despite the laudable ambition.

So Mars Express has some really good ideas, but they’re drowned in too many references and, above all, too sluggish a beat.

“So Mars Express has some really good ideas, but they’re drowned in too many references and, above all, very sluggish pacing.” Does too much respect kill respect? I think so too Beerus (1.5 stars) that pulls no punches with the film: “It lasts 1 hour 25, but we feel their passing (…) the script is full of clichés and situations seen a thousand times, reproaches (T-1000 launched with its blades, moved…)”

Internet users love the ambition of Mars Express. Its animation quality, its dubbing, its very topical themes and its references.

But it is not unanimous. For others, its influence detracts from its originality, and the rhythm leaves much to be desired, despite its fairly short duration.

And you ? What did you think of Mars Express?
