Russia sees Moldova’s decision to join European Union sanctions against the country as a hostile step aimed at destroying ties with Moscow, and will retaliate, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
The Russian statement was released in response to Moldova’s parliament voting to join the sanctions as part of measures to amend its legislation as necessary for its bid to join the European Union.
“We view this as another hostile step by the Moldovan leadership, which is fully integrated into the anti-Russian campaign of the collective West,” the Russian ministry said in a statement.
“Their goal is the complete destruction of relations between Russia and Moldova, which, through the fault of the Chisinau authorities, are already in a very deplorable state.”
Moscow will react, the ministry said.
The 62 deputies of Moldova’s President Maia Sandu’s Action and Solidarity Party supported the legislation, ensuring its approval in the Assembly in the capital Chisinau.
Its provisions include rules on actions to be taken against individuals and institutions subject to sanctions imposed on Russia in relation to the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The legislation also aims to protect against undue influence by tycoons corporate or “oligarchs”.
