What is true about Diana’s death in The Crown?

The sixth and final season of the Netflix series The Crown is now available on the streaming platform to the delight of fans. The story, which tells of the intrigues, love stories and dramas that occurred over time involving the British royals, reached the delicate moment in which the tragic accident occurred which caused the death of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), also known as the Princess of Wales, Lady Di and People’s Princess (for her philanthropic actions).

The series told what happened in the summer of 1997 and what were the events preceding the accident and the death of Diana and Dodi Fayed (Khalid Abdalla), a film producer with whom the princess had a love affair at the time , in Paris.

However, while it is based on real events, the series has also taken the liberty of portraying inaccurate moments, with information that is merely speculation. Check below what is real and what is fiction about Diana’s death in season 6 of The Crown series.

Although there is nothing to prove the conversation between the two before Princess Diana’s death, as shown in The Crown, it appears that they changed their relationship to something more amicable before the tragic accident.

In an interview with Squad, Hugo Vickers, a royal expert who advised the series, said that Diana and Charles’ relationship had matured into something more civil. “I’m not saying they suddenly became close friends, but as with many divorced parents, over time things calmed down and didn’t get more difficult.”

It also states that the two had mutual interest and concern for the children who kept them in contact.

Tina Brown, a journalist and presenter who maintained personal contact with Diana, stated in the princess’s biography The Chronicles of Diana who once confessed that they were both on excellent terms. “Charles used to visit her at Kensington Palace and they would drink tea and exchange sad words. They even had a few laughs together.”

. There is a lot of speculation involving Princess Diana, her boyfriend Dodi and a ring he purchased. Dodi’s father, Mohamed Al-Fayed, said Diana and her son were engaged to be married on the day the tragedy occurred, but there is no evidence the proposal was made.

Although London’s chief inspector at the time claimed that the ring had been found in Fayed’s apartment, in the investigation into the Paget operation, Trevor Rees-Jones, the bodyguard who accompanied Dodi and Diana to Monte Carlo in August 1997, he reported that they had not visited Insieme at the Repossi jewelry store, where the ring was purchased.

. In The Crown, shortly before Diana’s death, a car was in front of the Ritz to distract the paparazzi so Diana and Dodi could exit out the back door. In the Operation Paget report it was confirmed that this strategy was indeed used. Two cars had parked in front of the building while Diana and Dodi had moved away to another place, but some paparazzi also covered the back door, giving rise to a motorcycle chase behind the car they were in, a few moments before the tragedy occurred.

There is much discussion about the sobriety of the driver driving the car with Lady Di, Dodi and Trevor Rees-Jones (the only survivor of the accident) on board, but the evidence of Henri Paul’s drunkenness is somewhat uncertain.

In The Crown, Henri was at the bar and there were two glasses of drink on the table he was at, suggesting he was drinking alcohol before getting into the car. In real life, toxicology tests were carried out which revealed that Henri had around three times more alcohol in his blood than is recommended in France, as well as containing fluoxetine which, when mixed with alcohol, can amplify the effects of the drink .

Nothing indicates that the driver was often drunk, in fact a few days earlier he had taken the annual test to renew his license and the test showed him fit to drive, without any sign of alcohol in this regard. . Furthermore, he had already finished his shift when he allegedly started drinking, and the Operation Paget investigation highlights that the toxicology results are not entirely reliable, leaving a gap in the story regarding this detail.

. After receiving the news of Diana’s death, in the fourth episode of The Crown, William disappears, generating a general uproar. They begin searching all over Balmoral for the prince, but he returns only 14 hours later, wet from the rain.

In real life, the young prince actually claims to have found religious comfort at Crathie Kirk, a church frequented by the royals when they are at Balmoral, however, there is nothing to prove he disappeared at the time. William never admitted this and there is no evidence of this fact.

. William said in the documentary “Diana, Our Mother: Life and Legacy,” that he will forever carry the weight of his last conversation with his mother. At the time, not knowing what fate had in store for them, the young princes were more interested in meeting their cousins, and their telephone conversation happened very quickly. “If I had known now what would happen, I would not have been so indifferent,” said Prince William, “But that call is etched in my mind [de forma] quite heavy.”

. In The Crown, Harry receives a video game from his mother after his death, intended for him on his thirteenth birthday. In your book Replacementthe prince claims to have received an Xbox and was told that it belonged to his mother, however, the console was only released in November 2001, four years after Diana’s death, so this little information does not fit the logic.

Also in his book, Harry states that the trauma caused by his mother’s death affected his memories, making his memories of that period properly hazy.

In the series, Queen Elizabeth was portrayed in a somewhat harsh light when she chose to address Diana’s death five days after the event, via a speech on TV.

This delay in speaking out about the matter actually happened, but in her statement she explained that during the time she remained silent, she was caring for her nephews, William and Harry, who were grieving the untimely loss of their mother.

The Queen also made a small gesture as the coffin of the late Princess of Wales passed Buckingham Palace, a slight nod of her head in recognition. Taking into account that the queen is not obliged to greet or recognize anyone, the gesture had great weight in the story.
