At the root of the Dutton family

Discover the history of the Dutton family and all the details and drama surrounding this historical saga in logical sequence.

1883 – Initial generation of Duttons

In this initial phase of the Duttons’ history, the narrative follows the saga of James, the first chronological patriarch of that saga. In 1883, James and his wife Margaret left Tennessee with James’ sister and niece, both of whom soon died. Interestingly, the Duttons will arrive and colonize Yellowstone during this journey, where they will end up losing their daughter Elsa in the process. Just as it is important to underline that James died in 1893, after being shot by horse thieves.

As fans of the production may note, the time span between 1883 and 1923 is 40 years. Just as the difference in plot between these two dates is also something quite discrepant. At one point, James’ brother Jacob takes command of Yellowstone and turns the land into a small empire. The brothers face threats to their land, which becomes a motif that will last for many generations of Duttons.

In this phase of the Dutton family, the plot focuses on Cara Dutton and Jacob Dutton, owners of Yellowstone Ranch, as they face powerful enemies who threaten their land ownership.

Jacob and Cara had no children, but they were a father and mother figure to Spencer and John. Additionally, Jacob and Cara were responsible for taking care of the ranch after James and Margarett’s deaths. Jacob’s nephew, John Dutton Sr, marries Emma and they have a son: Jack Dutton.
