It was Alexa Fogel, his agent, who advised Idris Elba to pretend to be American in the auditions for The Wire, because David Simon, the creator of the cop show, only wanted to hire actors of that nationality. Everything worked until the fourth hearing. But when asked about his childhood and his past in general, Idris Elba ended up breaking down.
“My parents always told me not to lie, look people in the eye and be honest”– says the 51-year-old actor. “For The Wire, I lied. It’s something that never worked for me.”
Idris Elba admitted lying at the hearing and asked not to fire his agent. In the end, this fib did not have serious consequences for the actor. Of course, he didn’t get the part he applied for (the role of Avon Barksdale, eventually played by Wood Harris), but he did get Stringer Bell. The performance that opened the door to Hollywood for him.
