On November 15, the newest film in the Hunger Games series, The Hunger Games: Song of Birds and Serpents, premiered in theaters. Like any successful sequel, it thrilled fans and, with this hook, we took the opportunity to remember all the chapters of the saga so you can orient yourself and know the correct order to watch The Hunger Games.
The new film is inspired by the book of the same name by Suzanne Collins and, if it follows the same path as the previous ones, promises to be a box office and critical success. This successful path has been followed since 2012, with the release of the first film. There were four predecessors and in Brazil they were seen by more than 14.5 million people. Worldwide revenue reached $2.9 billion, the twentieth highest box office in history.
However, the first film does not recount the older facts reported in the book series. The saga became a bestseller, exceeding 85 million books sold in over 35 countries. To follow the correct chronology, below you can see the sequence to see all the films and other information about them. And now, let’s start from the end! Understand the correct order of The Hunger Games:
1- The Hunger Games: Song of Birds and Serpents (2023)
The latest release in the series features the oldest story among the previous four films. It refers to events that occurred 64 years before Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of the saga, played by Jennifer Lawrence, participated in the competition.
The plot also shows Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) long before he became president of Panem. He still appears as a student and we can learn facts about his childhood and youth and how Snow became so hateful. During his time at the Academy, he is chosen to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), the girl who was one of the 12th District’s Tributes.
Tip: Pay attention to the different explanations about the trilogy that appear in the new film. One of these is the origin of the song “The Hanging Tree,” one of the most iconic moments in the book Mockingjay (and the movie Mockingjay: Part 1).
2- Hunger Games (2012)

The first film in the series was released 11 years ago in theaters. In it we meet Panem, a nation from the distant future, located in a territory divided into 12 districts after a civil war. An event called the Hunger Games was created, a competition in which a young man from each district is randomly chosen to fight.
In this context we meet Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), who offers to fight in her sister’s place. Only one Tribute (name given to the competitors) makes it out of the competition alive.
The adventure begins when Katniss travels to the capital with her district partner, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Katniss trains for the event with the help of Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson), who has already won the games once.
3- The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

Katniss and Peeta return home after winning the 74th Hunger Games. Now the two must embark on another adventure to visit the other destinations of the Victory Tour.
Along the way, Katniss and Peeta encounter a rebellion in the Capitol, which they may have started. For this reason they are forced to participate in a special edition of the tournament, the Quaternary Massacre, which takes place every 25 years and brings together the winners of past editions.
4- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014)

Katniss survives the Hunger Games arena, but her district, the 12th, is destroyed. She now lives as a refugee in the 13th district and becomes the chosen symbol of the resistance against Snow’s rule.
His partner, Peeta Mellark, has been kidnapped and held captive by President Snow. Snow wants Peeta to forget everything he loved about Katniss, so Peeta is brainwashed. At the same time, Katniss learns of a secret rebellion spreading across Panem. Once again, conflict puts Katniss in the spotlight and she goes into battle against the ruthless Snow to save Peeta.
This third film is the first part of the adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ latest book, Mockingjay. This is where other themes begin to gain prominence, such as the revolution and its aftermath, taking on a political subtext and offering less emphasis on the action scenes. The film’s marketing strategy was to divide the outcome of the story into two parts.
5- The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – The Finale (2015)

Katniss is still recovering from seeing Peeta against her, but is sent to the 2nd District to encourage the residents to rebel against the Capital. With all the districts united, she begins the decisive attack against President Snow.
In the final part, Katniss receives help from her friends Gale (Liam Hemsworth), Finnick (Sam Claflin), Cressida (Natalie Dormer) and Pollux (Elden Henson) and decides to create a rebel resistance, Squadron 451. Katniss risks her life once once again on the decisive mission to free the people of Panem from the tyranny of the Capital government and overthrow President Snow (Donald Sutherland).
