Rating 1.5 out of 5: Will one of Nicolas Cage’s worst movies get a sequel?

In February 2007, a year before Iron Man and the MCU’s first stone, Nicolas Cage stepped into the Ghost Rider suit on behalf of Marvel. Unfortunately, unlike Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Tony Stark, the role of Johnny Blaze did not leave a lasting memory for comic book fans.

However, the first installment did well at the box office, bringing in $228 million worldwide on a $110 million budget. The second opus, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011), was made on a more limited budget of 57 million GEL, which is not usual for a sequel. At least it earned 132 million dollars internationally.

In France, Ghost Rider attracted 1 million viewers in 2007. 4 years later, The Spirit of Vengeance attracted half as many curious people with 490,000 admissions. Despite relatively decent box office returns, both works were panned by critics and the public. The first episode on AlloCiné is rated 1.9 out of 5 by viewers. As for the second part, it scores a dismal 1.5 out of 5.

After this fiasco, Marvel completely abandoned this fiery superhero to devote himself to the main figures of the MCU: Iron Man, Captain America and Thor. Ghost Rider hasn’t appeared in a movie since 2011. However, he was played by Gabriel Luna in Season 4 of Agents of SHIELD as Robbie Reyes.

To remind you, the story of Ghost Rider follows Johnny Blaze of Cascade. He sold his soul to the devil to save his father, who was a victim of an accident. But this deal comes at a price, which he soon discovers: a man by day, he becomes a horseman by night, a fortune hunter tracking souls who have escaped from Hell. When Roxanne is threatened, John decides to use his powers to get back at his master.

It’s unlikely we’ll see Nicolas Cage don Johnny Blaze’s jacket again in Ghost Rider Episode 3. The actor moved on; For several years now, he has been trying to make up for his painful period by participating in more ambitious feature films such as Pig, A Talent in Solid Gold, Renfield or Dream Scenario, in theaters on December 27.

However, in 2021 there have been rumors of a possible Ghost Rider return to the MCU with a new actor portraying him. Additionally, fans campaigned for Keanu Reeves to reprise the role. Rumors also claimed that the character would appear in Doctor Strange 2. This was not the case.

Today, Marvel Studios still has no plans to bring this character back to the big screen. However, with all these multiverse stories, it’s not out of the question that Johnny Blaze will return to theaters one day.

And if you miss Nicolas Cage, he’ll be appearing in Dream Scenario on December 27th.
