Daniel Kaluuya wins Film Award for directing “The Kitchen”

In an interview with Rolling Stone UK, the actor talks about his career in cinema and his new feature film, which won the Film Award

Daniel Kaluuya won the award ‘Film Award 2023’ from the Rolling Stone UK with his latest film, ‘The Kitchen’. The British artist, now making his debut as a director, has surpassed renowned competitors with his work, which still has no confirmed release date in Brazil. During the awards ceremony, Kaluuya expressed his intention to create something exciting not only for London and the United Kingdom, but for the world, showing the reality of many black people.

Set in London, in the near future, in 2044, the plot of ‘The Kitchen’ depicts where the difference between rich and poor reached its peak. Exploring black life in a dystopian setting, the film shows the discrimination of all forms of social housing, forcing London’s working classes to live in temporary accommodation on the outskirts of the city, showing how far social inequality and elitism can go.

‘The Kitchen’ can be released exclusively in the original format on the platform Netflix.Kaluuya emphasizes that the film represents a high point in his career, highlighting the overcoming of a self-esteem that was previously influenced by external opinions. The actor and director talks about his struggle to reach the top, since his participation in Skins, winning a statuette Oscar in Best Actor and now the Film Award for the Rolling Stone UK with its own production.

“Even though I was reaching the checkpoints I wanted, it was empty because I didn’t feel in control of my career. I want to make this film for the people around me socially, not professionally. I realized that I was being respected by people who didn’t pay my bills. All these decisions lead to the inevitability of fame. Because, basically, I went from self-interest to serving others.”
