The Guardians of the Galaxy hero didn’t actually say “I am Groot”

The slogan “I am Groot” is famous, but the real explanation is an accidental mistranslation

After the success of the films Guardians of the Galaxyeveryone around the world has known the arboreal hero Groot and his iconic catchphrase “I’m Groot” (or “I am Groot,” in Portuguese.) Although this was adopted by the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as a phrase that means much more, depending on the context, in the comics things were very different.

In fact, this phrase originally arose from a complete translation error. Marvel Comics itself revealed it, in The Infinity Gauntletreleased in 2015, as part of the reboot known as the latest Secret Wars.

The plot of this comic takes place in an alternate timeline, where Thanos continues his search for the famous Infinity Stones, trying to collect the cosmic gems from his protectors. It is in this event that the tree sapient Groot reappears in the Marvel Universe – to the Secret Wars 2015 They also served to align the MCU characters in the comics, and this was one of the characters that didn’t have the same relevance or characterization in the cinema as the comics.

What did Groot say?

The comic reveals that Groot didn’t speak”I’m Groot“, just as his first lines were a translation error, due to a misinterpretation by his alleged Guardians of the Galaxy teammates.

The plot is set in Battleworld (or “War World”, in Portuguese), the planet where the Secret Wars, showed the adventure with a group consisting of Star-Lord, Gamora and members of the Nova Corps, all led by a girl named Anwen. The team’s goal was to find the stones before the Mad Titan could carry out his plan.

Their search took them to a forest where they believed one of the Infinity Stones was hidden. And it is precisely there that Groot reappears in the Marvel Universe, as the hypothesis that the stone was inside the tree ends when he speaks, revealing himself to be an alien creature.

In this story, the Guardians of the Galaxy, in the lineup popularized by the films, had not yet reunited, so this was the first time that all the same members who appeared in the cinema were seen in the comics in the same place.

Groot simply repeats some of these words:

Gamora, shocked when the creature reveals its eyes, describes the situation with a sentence containing the word “eye” (“eye”, in English). Anwen contemplates the position of the stone and pronounces “hmmm“, while the brother tries to explain that the tree has grown (“grown up“) with roots (“root“) on the Infinity Stone.

Then Groot simply repeats some of those words: “the eye hmmm has taken root” (something like “hmm the eye has taken root”). Anwen assumes he was saying “I’m Groot” (“I am Groot”), in a wrong and accidental translation, from which the famous catchphrase was born.

Although the origin of this phrase, which has become iconic in pop culture, has nothing to do with what it has become in cinema, comics have adopted the slogan in cinemas and, just as the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy have recast the team of the comics, director James Gunn also version ended up becoming part of the Marvel Universe in the comics.
