In Dubai, the Senate President said the issues were ‘appropriate’ for the start of 2024, but said he intended to vote in December on Dino and Gonet’s nominations for STF and PGR
DUBAI – Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG) said he intends to lead the proposed Constitutional Amendment (PEC) that creates a fixed mandate for ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in early 2024, so like the PEC ending re-election in Brazil. “These are two very appropriate topics to discuss early next year,” he said in an interview in Dubai, shortly before visiting the Brazilian pavilion at the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP-28).
The proposal to establish a mandate for the ministers of the Supreme Court was already on his radar, but it acquired greater importance in Pacheco’s speeches after the PEC which limits the individual decisions of the STF ministers and tightened the conflict between the Court and Congress. The MP also defends raising the minimum age for new ministers, which is currently 35 years old.
Flávio Dino’s hearing at the CCJ will take place on December 13 and will be reported by a senator from Maranhão
Pacheco says the Senate will make a concerted effort to vote on Dino and Gonet’s nominations in December
Pacheco says STF reaction to PEC was ‘disproportionate’ at event where three ministers were absent
