December 3rd is celebrated as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a date institutionalized by the United Nations in October 1992. The day is dedicated to reflection and awareness of the rights of people with disabilities. The Ministry of Sports, together with the National Parasport Secretariat, listened to the story of three paracanoeing, paraclimbing and parabadminton athletes.
“We must show ourselves as normal people, we must have all the rights that an elderly person has, that a walking person must have, because we suffer a lot. There are places that do not accept us, that we do not accept people in wheelchairs because they cannot enter We need to normalize this so that all places are accessible to all people, this must be normal.”He says Maria Eduarda de Castro Souza, 12 years. She suffers from dwarfism and has been practicing parabadminton since she was 11 years old.
“Sport explained to me mentally that there are not only victories in life, that at a certain point you will have to lose and then you can win. And physically it made me stronger, more agile. It taught me to have dignity and when I enter a court I feel like a normal person, I don’t feel like a person suffering from dwarfism”, says Duda. He trains with his father, Reindeer, and discovered the sport after an aunt posted a photo with her. The coach saw her and asked her to join the team. In the last Brazilian competition you won a gold medal in the singles and two bronze medals, in the mixed doubles and in the women’s doubles.
