Chumbinho falls and is rescued unconscious in Hawaii; see the moment of the surfer’s rescue

João Chianca was hospitalized, but his brother says the Brazilian number 4 in world surfing is fine

The Brazilian surfer João Chianca was in an accident this Sunday, in Pipeline, Hawaii. Chumbinho was rescued while still unconscious and taken to hospital. He regained consciousness, but it is not known whether he is still hospitalized. Lucas Chumbo, João’s brother, says the surfer is fine.

Videomaker Bruno Lemos managed to capture the moment of Chumbinho’s save. Lemos reported that the surfer fell during the drop (the moment in which the athlete is on the board) and never got up again.

“He was underwater for a long time. All over the beach, several surfers jumped in to help him. He was unconscious, but they woke up. He says he’s fine,” the pro said on his Instagram. Journalist Shannon Marie Quirk, also present at the scene, reported that the surfer was taken to hospital. On social media, Lucas Chumbo, Chianca’s brother, said that “everything is fine” with Chumbinho.

The 23-year-old Brazilian is considered the number 4 in world surfing. He will be one of Brazil’s representatives in this sport at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games
