Coach Abel Ferreira has not said whether he will stay or leave Palmeiras after the victory against Fluminense, at Allianz Parque. With his name linked to some indiscretions, the Portuguese assured that he has not yet made a decision and is leaving the future open.
“I haven’t defined it yet, you know I haven’t defined it. You know I have a contract. It’s all speculation,” the coach said in a press conference.
Abel’s contract with Verdão, in fact, is extended until the end of 2024. But the news that he had received a proposal from Al-Saad, of Qatar, left Palmeiras fans uneasy. According to the newspaper Sport, if he accepted the offer, he would become the highest paid coach in the world.
The Portuguese treats everything as mere speculation and focuses on the final part of the Brazilian championship. His team is the leader of the tournament and could be crowned champion even with a defeat on Wednesday, against Cruzeiro, in Mineirão.
In a press conference recently, Abel expressed irritation at the huge run of matches the club played before the FIFA break. The statements on Brazilian football have left doubts about whether he will remain in the country.
This Sunday, the coach acknowledged he was “fed up” but warned “not to be ungrateful.” He is close to winning his ninth title at the helm of Palmeiras.
“I’ve said before that I’m fed up and it’s not a lie at all. It’s difficult to play and travel every three days, I see entities in Brazilian football who call me this or that. Do you think it’s easy? It’s been three years, right? Three days “Every year I arrive at the end of the season with a ready report of what I asked for the previous year. What happened and what I think about what the club will be in the future”, said Abele.
“This report is ready and will be delivered as soon as the Brasileirão ends. It’s very tiring to be a coach in Brazilian football, but I’ll tell you one thing. I’m not ungrateful. Ok?”, he concluded.
Amid uncertainty over Abel’s future, Palmeiras could celebrate their 12th Brazilian title this Wednesday. The team will visit Cruzeiro in Mineirão at 9.30pm (Brasilia time), for the last round of the competition.
