Biden says he’s “not sure” whether he would seek re-election if Trump doesn’t run

US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that he might have avoided a re-election bid if he had not faced Donald Trump, adding that the Republican poses a unique threat to the country.

“If Trump didn’t run, I’m not sure I would run,” Biden said at a fundraiser for his 2024 campaign outside Boston. “We can’t let him win.”

Biden’s comments come as even staunch Democratic voters express concern about the president’s age. He turned 81 last month.

The president’s advisers increasingly believe Trump will solidify his position as the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination in the coming weeks, according to two Democrats.

During his 2020 presidential campaign, Biden often said that his decision to run was due in part to then-President Trump’s handling of issues such as a 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Now, the Biden campaign once again sees Trump as a danger to democracy itself.

Trump, who faces criminal charges over his efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat, has painted Biden as a dangerous autocrat.

Biden announced his reelection bid in April after privately concluding that neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor any other Democratic candidate could defeat Trump in next year’s general election, according to a former White House official.
