BRASILIA, 06 DEC – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) arrived in Rio de Janeiro to participate in the Mercosur summit this Thursday (7) after visiting Germany and participating in COP28, in Dubai, in recent days. The president is still betting on a “very” likely signing of the agreement with the European Union (EU) at the meeting that will mark the beginning of the process of Bolivia’s incorporation into the regional bloc.
This Wednesday (6), the ministers of Finance, Fernando Haddad, and Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, participate in the meeting of the Mercosur Council. Lula will meet tomorrow with representatives of the other three countries of the bloc: Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay.
Lula, current interim president of Mercosur, concluded a visit to Germany last Tuesday, where he promised to work until “the last moment” to finalize the pact with the EU, despite the veto expressed by French president Emmanuel Macron.
“I will not give up until I have spoken to all the presidents and hear no from everyone,” the PT member said.
During the summit, Paraguayan President Santiago Peña will assume six-month command of the bloc and is expected to move forward with the inclusion of Bolivia.
“It is expected that Bolivia can quickly complete the accession process and work with other member states to define a program for the internalization of Mercosur rules and regulations,” reads a note from the Brazilian government. .
