Prince Harry on Friday lost his bid to dismiss the Mail on Sunday newspaper’s defense in a libel case, meaning the British royal is likely to testify again at London’s High Court next year.
Harry, King Charles’s youngest son, sued publisher Associated Newspapers last year over a 2022 article in which he alleged it only offered to pay for police protection after entering into a legal dispute separate against the British government.
The report also accuses Harry, 39, of attempting to mislead the public about his willingness to pay for the police, which was withdrawn after he retired from royal duties in 2020.
Harry asked for the Associate’s defense to be thrown out, with his lawyers arguing in March that Harry had first offered to pay for police protection in a crisis meeting with the late Queen Elizabeth, his father and his brother Prince William at the royal Sandringham estate in January 2020. .
The Associated’s lawyers, however, said Harry admitted he had not offered to pay for police protection in correspondence with the British government before taking legal action.
They also argued that a statement released by Harry’s representatives before the publication of the Associated article falsely claimed that the government had rejected Harry’s offer to pay for police protection.
Judge Matthew Nicklin said in a written ruling that Harry’s case must go to trial, which is likely to happen in 2024, with the royal expected to face cross-examination again after testifying in a separate case this year.
The Associate declined to comment and Harry’s representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
