Netflix released, this Friday (8), its new apocalyptic film, The World After Uswhich promises to be as successful as bird box (2018) and Don’t Look Up (2021). The film has a surprising ending that should lead many viewers to question whether the story has a continuation or not.
Warning: the following text contains spoilers The World After Usnew Netflix film!
In the story, a family’s vacation in a luxurious house is compromised by a cyber attack, which causes a blackout on all devices. The situation gets even worse when two strangers appear at the door and they begin to notice that things are getting worse and the world is collapsing, with no possibility of salvation for the family and the rest of the population.
In the final moments of The World After Us, we discovered that the United States is being attacked, not only through cyberattack, but with other means of mass destruction. After analyzing what is happening, GH Scott (Mahershala Ali, Moonlight: Under the Moonlight) reveals that the country is probably evolving into a civil war, as part of an annihilation plan that he had already heard about.
We then see New York City being bombed, while Amanda (Julia Roberts, A beautiful woman) It is Ruth (Myha’la, Industry) watch from a distance, completely hopeless.
The film then ends with Rose (Farrah Mackenzie, Utopia), who had fled the house where his family was staying because he could no longer stand being cooped up and without news, arriving at some neighbors’ house and finding a survival bunker.
Inside, the girl finds several DVDs, including the latest season of Friends, who starts watching immediately, determined to find out what happens to her friends in New York in the final episode, ending the film without any great answers about what really happened, who is behind the attacks or what happened to the population.
But after all, The World After Us Is there a sequel?
The new Netflix film is based on the book of the same name by RumaanAlam, released in 2020, which has the same ambiguous ending presented in the adaptation for the streaming platform. And, unfortunately, there is no sequel revealing what happened to the United States and its population after the start of the apocalypse.
However, this does not stop Netflix from investing in an unprecedented sequel to the story. In an interview with Digital Spy, Sam Esmailscreenwriter of The World After Usrevealed that the idea was never to give the public easy answers:
“We all got into it [com nossos] eyes wide open. When you make a film, especially a mystery thriller, it still ends with a question mark that risks polarizing the audience.”it started.
“I think we’ve all committed ourselves to the belief that there shouldn’t be an easy answer.”continued Esmail.
“We shouldn’t beat around the bush here because, like in life, we have to face ambiguities all the time. That was essential to the book and central to what I wanted to do in the film – there are no easy answers and solutions and we have to face that and move forward anyway.”added the screenwriter.
The World After Us is the first fiction film produced by Higher Ground Productions, the company owned by the former president of the United States, Barack Obamaand the former first lady, MichelleObamawhich previously focused on children’s programs, documentaries and historical dramas.
