The total investment reaches R$440 million

Last March, the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, commented on the situation of the National Museum, underlining that 61% of the sum foreseen for the total renovation had already been collected. “The idea is to realize the results in the first half of 2026. The total investment is R $ 440 million, R $ 180 million remains to be raised,” he said at the time.

In an interview with Folha de S. Paulo, published on Saturday 9, the director of the National Museum, Alexander Kellner, stated that the idea is to reopen the site with around 50-60% of its total surface area available to the public , and that a small area could be reopened in 2024, with a visit to the meteorite room and the monumental staircase.

“The Museum has already done everything it had to do and we are waiting for the resources. We have asked for a hearing with Alerj, who promised us, in 2019, R$ 20 million, which have not yet been received”, he declared, in reference to the bill approved in August 2020, which allocates R$20 million from the Special Fund of the Fluminense Parliament to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), sponsor of the National Museum.

OR Estadao sought contact with the board of directors of the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro, as well as the federal government’s Ministry of Culture on the matter, but received no response until the publication of this report.
