The iconic Hollywood sign turns 100 years old in 2023
The Hollywood sign turned 100 years old in 2023. In celebration of the centenary, around 1,500 liters of paint were used to renew the letters and, last Friday, the 8th, they received symbolic lighting. The sign had not been lit for decades, due in part to complaints from area residents, according to the president of the Hollywood Sign Trust, Jeff Zarrinam (via The globe).
About last night… 💡🤔
Yesterday, Chairman Jeff Zarrinnam and Secretary Brian Lane ‘lit the Sign’ to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first ever documented lighting of the Sign.

Originally, the sign said “Hollywoodland” and was part of an advertising initiative to promote a luxury real estate development. In 1949, the letters were already worn out and needed repair. It was the perfect opportunity to save costs and remove the “land” from the word, making Hollywood no longer restricted to just that land.
In the 1970s, Alice Cooper led a campaign to restore the Los Angeles landmark. The musician donated 27 thousand dollars, while other celebrities became sponsors of the letters “o”, “l”, “y” and “w”.
