New apocalyptic production from the streaming platform features Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke and Kevin Bacon in the cast
The World After Usa new film from Netflix, premiered a few days ago, but is already at the top of the most watched films on the streaming platform, proving that it should be as successful as other apocalyptic productions such as bird box (2018) and Don’t Look Up (2021).
The film is an adaptation of the book of the same name by Rumaan Alamreleased in 2020. In the story, a family’s vacation in a luxurious house is compromised by a cyber attack, which causes a blackout on all devices.
The situation gets even worse when two strangers appear at the door and they begin to notice that things are getting worse and the world is collapsing, with no possibility of salvation for the family and the rest of the population.
One of the “symptoms” of the apocalypse is the strange behavior of deer, which begin to appear around the house rented by the family. In several scenes, they surround humans and maintain an alert, almost threatening posture, causing fear in the characters.
In an interview with the Netflix website, the director and screenwriter of the film, Sam Esmailrevealed that he wanted to play with the idea of animals like deer, which are generally seen as calm and even adorable, becoming threatening to humans:
“Deer are peaceful creatures. I thought it would be very interesting to transform that sweet image into something sinister, threatening, almost a warning”he explained. “That’s the trick of this movie. We always try to take things that we never considered a threat and then turn the tables on them.”
In the interview, Esmail also revealed that all the animals were created digitally by the special effects team of The World After Us: “They knew we wanted to make the deer look as real as possible, and they were on set. We had mockups there so the actors had something to interact with, and we made sure the skin lighting [fosse] as accurate as possible”he still said.
