Netflix’s latest feature film, “The World After Us,” has caused a stir on social media.
The plot follows people trying to survive a technological apocalypse and divides opinions on social media, as while some liked the film, others questioned its ending, which was considered too open-ended and interpretive.
Therefore, this sets a precedent:
Let’s start from the end. Regardless of whether people liked it or not, it already exists and it is what it is. We already have clues in the final scenes about what happened, and when we put it all together, we can get an idea of what could have happened.
There is also the fact that the perpetrators of the blackout were not revealed, which was purely intentional and should remain so. We have to think that the film was made from the point of view of the characters who suffer the consequences of the blackout, that is, during the film we only have the information that they have, which is little, which makes the film take over based on hypotheses and theories.
It is also worth mentioning that the film focuses on consequences and not actions, which rules out the possibility of a sequel. It shows the possible attitudes of people in situations like the one we saw in the film.
Finally, “The World After Us” is based on the book by Rumaan Alam, which does not have a sequel or another spin-off story. Therefore, unless the author decides to create something new regarding this universe, it will be difficult to think of a sequel on Netflix. But you never know.
