The PGR’s independence and closeness to Lula are possible topics for Gonet and Dino at the hearing

The candidates for the presidency of the Attorney General and the Federal Court will be questioned simultaneously this Wednesday the 12th, starting at 9 am, at the Constitution and Justice Commission of the Senate

The Minister of Justice, Flavio Dinoappointed by the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to the Federal Court (STF) and the deputy prosecutor Paolo Gustavo Gonet Brancochosen by the member of the PT to command the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), will be heard this Wednesday 13th, starting at 9am, at the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) From Federal Senate.

The hearing is an acid test for the candidates, who have spent the last few weeks “kissing the hands” of senators to try to gather the necessary votes.

After the hearings, the nominations are voted on by the CCJ and subsequently must be vetted by the full Senate. It is customary for voting to take place on the same day, i.e. the tendency is for the results to be known by the end of this Wednesday. Approval depends on a simple majority (41 votes) of the plenary.

This is the first time that STF and PGR command candidates will be interviewed at the same time. Dino and Gonet will sit side by side at the CCJ. Questions should be asked in blocks. The model, however, is not new. It has recently been used, for example, with the three names indicated by Lula to the Superior Court of Justice (STJ).

The nomination of Paulo Gonet should pass without difficulty. He should be questioned on the conservative positions expressed throughout his career, on the independence of the Federal Public Ministry and on Operation Lava Jato.

Dino’s name will probably encounter greater resistance and the minister’s interlocutors believe that he is prepared for the clashes he will have to face. Opposition senators should question him, for example, about his closeness to Lula.

Survey carried out by Estadao it emerges that, so far, 25 senators have declared that they will vote in favor of Dino, while 23 will oppose the nomination. Another 25 preferred not to vote in advance and eight were not contacted by the newspaper.

If approved, Dino will fill the vacancy left by retired minister Rosa Weber in the STF. Gonet is expected to succeed Augusto Aras, who left the command of the PGR after being appointed and reappointed by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
