Mahsa Amini’s family lawyer sentenced in Iran

Saleh Nikbakht accused of “propaganda against the system”

Saleh Nikbakht, lawyer for the family of Iranian Jina Mahsa Amini, a young woman who died because she had not worn the veil correctly, was sentenced this Saturday (16th) to one year in prison.

The 73-year-old lawyer was accused of “propaganda against the system for being interviewed by Iranian dissident media,” his representative, Ali Rezai, told the Shargh newspaper.

At a ceremony in Strasbourg, France, Nikbakht represented Amini’s family when she received the Sakharov Prize, awarded by the European Union Parliament, last Tuesday (12).

The Iranian woman’s parents and brother were arrested at Tehran airport and their passports confiscated on December 8, while they were traveling to France for the awards ceremony. The activist’s family is now banned from travel.

The 22-year-old Kurdish woman was arrested by Tehran police on charges of violating the rules on wearing the Islamic headscarf. She died in hospital three days after her arrest due to attacks she suffered while in custody.

Amini’s death sparked a wave of protests against the theocratic regime in force in the country since 1979, the compulsory use of the veil and gender discrimination.

The Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Chancellor, Antonio Tajani, paid tribute to the Iranian woman in an event in Rome dedicated to the country, held on the occasion of the award ceremony. .
