Director Christopher Nolan, responsible for films for mass audiences, celebrated the explosion of his latest feature-length biopic, “Oppenheimer.”
The film was an unexpected success, given its long running time (three hours), large cast of historical characters, and dark plot.
In gross terms, “Oppenheimer” surpassed approximately $950 million (R$4.61 billion) at the global box office, considered the third-highest-grossing film of 2023.
For those in a hurry
Success of the film
According to Omelettein an interview with empire, Nolan said he was “thrilled” by the film’s success.
I just made a three-hour movie about Robert Oppenheimer, R-rated and partly in black and white, and that movie made almost a billion dollars.

Responsible for directing films such as “Inception,” “Interstellar” and “Batman: The Dark Knight,” Nolan emphasizes that he feels optimistic about the Hollywood industry.
Obviously I’m going to think the industry is in a fantastic position… The craziest thing is to think this is literally the most successful film I’ve ever made. The audience’s desire to be surprised, to see something new, to see something they didn’t know they wanted, this has always been cinema’s most powerful force. So it was wonderful to see him this year.

Change in cinema
However, the director believes that “Oppenheimer” is more successful in his personal calculation due to the smaller budget compared to DC blockbusters.
Furthermore, it emphasizes the adult and dramatic elements which would theoretically make it less commercially viable in the current Hollywood film landscape.
For him, the success of the film, along with other feature films, such as “Barbie”, represented a change in current cinema.
I’ve been directing films for 20 years and ‘Oppenheimer’ is my biggest box office success in the UK, for example. So I actually feel great about the state of the film industry, and I’m not just saying that from my experience, but from having seen other films succeed and audiences return to theaters.

“Oppenheimer”
The film tells the story of the eponymous American physicist, J. Robert Oppenheimer, as he develops the atomic bomb during World War II.
The film shows in detail the process of creating the nuclear weapon, featuring historical figures, such as Albert Einstein and American politicians of the time, as well as Oppenheimer’s personal life during construction.
Finally, after the success at the box office, Christopher Nolan’s film can also be seen at home through streaming platforms.
