Her Daddy’s Daughter: 3 Things You Need to Know About This Amazing Movie Featuring Therapy and Goodbye There

Sequel to Partridge?

Former journalist turned screenwriter and short film director Erwan Le Duc unveiled his first feature film in 2019: Perdrix. This romantic comedy, presented at Cannes Film Festival Monday, paints a portrait of Pierre Perdrix, a gendarmerie captain who shares his daily life as a single man with his mother and brother. The latter, a father who was raising his 12-year-old daughter alone, became the basis for writing the second film of his father’s daughter, a filmmaker.

We got a little glimpse into their story and there was already a separation issue between them, about the child who said he wanted to leave his father, but without abandoning him.The director explains. Then, I have to start my writing process from an idea, a somewhat broad theme, then feeding the text in fragments (…) The start of writing the screenplay dates back to the first imprisonment, in March 2020.

Being in prison meant I spent a lot of time with my family, especially my daughter. So the starting point is the story of the father-son relationship, the unconditional love between parent and child.

From the small to the big screen

If the choice of Nahuel Pérez Biscayart (Goodbye There) came too quickly to play Etienne, a single father, a football coach as gentle as he is philosophical and avoids the drama of his daughter’s abandonment by her mother, it is the TV series that allowed Celeste Brunkel (En Thérapie) to play Rosa role.

I saw it in the series in therapy, I have already found a singular presence in him. We met him at the casting– says Ervan Le Duc. The character of Rosa has a lot of text, sometimes real tirades, and during these tests Celeste was very impressive. She gave Rosa a softness that I didn’t necessarily imagine, but without losing the edge of character.

Celeste brought a lot of interior to the character, and very light. At a glance, with the movement of his head, he can change the atmosphere of the scene, bring about a completely unexpected emotion.

Introduction to the dream

Wanting to focus on the bond that unites this tender and unique father-son duo, the director chose to tell their past in an introductory scene that lasts less than ten minutes and is almost devoid of text. The opening of the film, based mainly on the music of Jules Ruet, which could have been completely different.

“I dreamed of this introduction that we see today, and the music made it possible. He is also introduced in a short voiceover, and the audience will probably realize during the film that this is Youssef’s character, reading what could be a fragment of his poem: “At the beginning, Etienne is 20 years old and he. There is no doubt about anything…”. The film begins with these few words.”

Her Father’s Daughter, Erwan Le Duc, is now and exclusively in cinemas.
