“Sensitive and attractive”: one of the best romantic films of the 90s will captivate you

On December 20, distributor The Jokers Classics offers special re-releases of 4 feature films by Hong Kong maestro Wong Kar-wai: Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, The Hand and Happy Together. All of these movies can be (re)discovered in restored 4K versions!

Among these works, Happy Together is undoubtedly one of the most poignant by the filmmaker, to whom we owe a special debt to In The Mood For Love. Winner of the 1997 Cannes Best Director Award, the film tells the story of two lovers, Lai and Ho, played by Tony Leung and Leslie Cheng. The latter will leave Hong Kong for Argentina.

Their adventure goes wrong and they leave each other. Lai, torn apart by this breakup, starts working as a barker at Tango in Buenos Aires to save money. Ho reappears one day in Bar Street… The lovers meet one last time to start all over again.

Written by two of the greatest Asian comedians of the time, Tony Leung and Leslie Chung, Happy Together is a production as emotionally powerful as it is aesthetically demanding.

“A feature film, less charming than in the mood of love or 2046, still Wong Kar-Wai’s romantic masterpiece. Erotic and sensual, the Hong Kong director’s film perfectly portrays a passionate story where two creatures hungry for each other cannot know satiety or satisfaction.indicates Anastasia Levy in the columns slate.

Leslie Chung and Tony Leung

AlloCiné viewers gave the film an average rating of 3.7 out of 5. According to Stebbins, Leslie Chegg and Tony Leung make a duo that works perfectly. Argentina is sublimated Christopher Doyle, Wong Kar-wai’s favorite cinematographer. In short: magnificent images, moving music and a virtuoso filmmaker, as if touched by grace.

Happy Together is one of my favorites by Wong Kar-wai. A small masterpiece, sensitive and attractive. It’s wonderful.”

Additionally, the story of Happy Together takes on a special aura today, 20 years after Leslie Chung committed suicide at the age of 46. A superstar Asian film actor ended his life by jumping from a hotel room in central Hong Kong.

He worked with Wong Kar-wai 3 times in Our Wild Years, The Ashes of Time and Happy Together. The actor who was robbed alive left an indelible mark in the heart of the 7th art.
