“No one in space will hear you scream”. If this tagline came down to us from the movie Alien, it could have been used on Gravity, Alfonso Cuaron’s masterpiece that came out in 2013.
In this sci-fi drama, Sandra Bullock finds herself and George Clooney facing the vastness of the universe when their shuttle is blown apart. The deafening silence around them tells them that they have lost all contact with Earth – and any chance of survival. They are slowly panicking, especially since with each breath they consume a little more of the remaining oxygen supply.
Shot in 3D with an innovative device that allows the audience to immerse themselves in the film and feel the fear of the characters, Gravity is a minor technical achievement as the entire film, except for the final scene, takes place in space. A success that allowed the various teams that worked on the film to walk away with 7 Oscars the following year, ranging from Best Feature Film to Best Cinematography.
With rave reviews from the press – it has a 4.6/5 rating on AlloCiné – the French flocked to the cinema to discover (and experience) this sensation. And it is a complete success. More than 4 million viewers went to see it in the cinema. Gravity also caused a sensation with other great directors, including James Cameron.
The director will talk about the film in an interview variety that he was “stunned and absolutely devastated.” then: “I think it’s the best space movie ever made.”. Cuarón’s direction, who co-wrote the screenplay with his son Jonas, was also praised by Buzz Aldrin (who accompanied Neil Armstrong to the moon in 1969), who highlighted the work he did in space.
If you haven’t seen Gravity or want to watch it again, know that it will leave the Prime Video catalog on December 31st and that this is the only streaming platform where it was available for free.
