The presidents of Egypt and Iran discussed recent events in the Gaza Strip and the prospect of resuming diplomatic ties between the two countries, in what Iranian state television said Saturday was the first phone call between the two authorities.
The broadcaster reported that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi called Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
They met for the first time in November, on the sidelines of the extraordinary joint Arab-Islamic summit in Riyadh.
“Raisi said that Iran is ready to provide all its capabilities to stop the genocide of the Zionist regime and send aid to the Palestinians,” Iranian television reported, adding that it was the first time the two had spoken on the phone.
Relations between Egypt and Iran have been tense in recent decades, but both countries have maintained some diplomatic contacts. The call comes after other initiatives taken by countries in the region to ease tension in recent months.
Saudi Arabia and Iran, Egypt’s allies, re-established diplomatic relations this year, as Cairo also ended its split with Qatar and re-established ties with Turkey.
