Warning, spoilers. I encourage you to watch the fifth episode of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series available on Disney + before continuing to read this article.
The fifth and final episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi, which was full of revelations, delighted fans with Darth Vader’s epic scenes, but also with a flashback sequence depicting the episode. And this scene lived up to expectations, as it was the exchange of Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ivan McGregor) and Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen).
We see the wizard and the paddock train in a light sword fight in a very elaborate and controlled sequence, as the actors are accustomed to in the prelude that unfolds around episode II of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, but to the Clone. Wars, if we turn to the haircut of two heroes.
When the Clone Attack came out 20 years ago, Evan McGregor and Hayden Christensen were 31 and 21 years old, respectively. For consistency, they both wore costumes and haircuts at the time they had. It also seems unmistakable that small digital retouches were done on their faces, as can be seen in closer shots.
But it is interesting to note that this numerical rejuvenation (Aging techniques, In English) is very light, given the fact that Hayden Christensen is not very old. It looks like Star Wars teams learned the digital rejuvenation of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) – unsuccessful and ridiculous – in Mandalorian’s Season 2.
Because the retouching is so light, we can still see a few more distinctive features on Hayden Christensen’s face, which, however, does not detract from the scene in question, as fans immediately realized it was a scene from the past.
But not everyone agrees. While fans are happy with this long-awaited series, some believe that Anakin Skywalker digital rejuvenation is not successful and does not even exist.
Spoilers # Kenobi Episode 5
I’m not one to criticize the SFX of conventional American production, but I do find that the rejuvenation that is likely to be used on Hayden’s Obi-Wan flashbacks does not exist when it’s supposed to be in II.– Akirato 忍 忍 忍 (Uchihakademī) Ⓥ (@Akirato_TV) June 15, 2022
Some point to the fact that Disney and Lucasfilm are “lazy” and that several Youtube themselves have redesigned the scene from episode 5 in full “aging”, which is much closer to a youthful look than what Hayden Christensen wore during that period. The clone era attack can be seen in the video below.
But others are very happy to choose not to abuse the special effects in this sequence. This allows the magic of the union of Ivan McGregor and Hayden Christensen to be activated and not to betray their emotions in this sequence full of nostalgia.
It is wonderful that Evab McGregor and Hayden Christensen were not rejuvenated for their practice scene. They could have behaved like Mark Hamill and rejuvenated for 20 years, but that they did without digital effects.#ObiWanKenobi # ობიანი # Anakin Skywalker pic.twitter.com/YJtYCSre1q
