Rated 4 out of 5 One of the best comedies of the 90’s is coming back to cinemas and it’s out!

The cult comedy of the 1990s, Mary at any cost is back in theaters in a restored 4K version! The story tells about Ted, played by Ben Stiller. When he was a teenager, he had a crush on Mary (Cameron Diaz), the prettiest girl in high school. But he suddenly moved without leaving an address.

Thirteen years later, Ted has lost neither his shyness nor his reputation as a loser, and is still in love with Mary… Then he decides to call Hilly, a makeshift private detective, to find her…

Released in theaters in November 1998, Mary at All Costs was a triumph, grossing $369 million worldwide on a $23 million budget. In France, the comedy attracted 3.5 million viewers. With this feature film, brothers Bobby and Peter Farrelly, announced four years earlier with Dumb and Dumber, achieved international success.

Nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Comedy, Mary at All Costs represents a turning point in the history of the genre in the United States. Today, many of his gags – a flight crash, a duel with a border terrier and the famous “Freeze” scene – are considered iconic!

Cameron Diaz

The success of this comedy is due in part to its perfect casting and actors: Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz and Matt Dillon. Mary at any cost also marks the latter’s first experience in pure comedy. The American actor has previously distinguished himself in drama (Drugstore Cowboy), satire (Prête à tout) and even thriller (Albino Alligator).

Note that the role of Ben Stiller was originally given to American football player Steve Young. But he, who belongs to the Mormon community, ultimately rejected the proposal due to the particularly crude and provocative nature of the feature film.

After this gigantic success, the Farrell brothers continued with absurd and provocative humor, often vulgar films such as Fous d’Irene, Osmosis Jones or Dumb & Dumber De. However, they also know how to be more sensitive, like L. ‘Amour extra large and Deux en un. Solo, Peter Farrelly even won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Screenplay for Drama Green Book in 2019.
