The ONS estimates investments of R$49 billion in energy transmission works until 2028

The expansion of Brazil’s electricity system is expected to require investments of 49 billion reais in power transmission works between 2024 and 2028, according to estimates from the National Electricity System Operator (ONS) published on Thursday.

Of these total, 4.9 billion reais refer to new works, as indicated in the Medium-Term Electricity Operation Plan of the National Interconnected System (SIN).

R$44.1 billion is already earmarked for projects from previous cycles that have not yet been awarded, including R$21.7 billion in transmission lines and new substations auctioned this month.

“The paper highlights that the growing share of highly variable renewable energy resources in the national electricity matrix makes managing the balance between load supply and demand even more complex,” the ONS said.

In 2023, centralized wind and photovoltaic plants will have an installed capacity of 38 GW, a level that is expected to reach 54 GW by the end of 2027, according to operator data, which does not include the expansion of Micro and Mini Distributed Generation (MMGD) , a modality that will be able to reach around 40 GW of installed power by 2027.

“(The Plan) also highlights that the investments planned for the strengthening of the transmission system will allow us to cope with the load, from 2029 to 2030, of the entire flow of surplus production from the North/Northeast to the South/Southeast/Central-West , from 2029 to 2030, as a direct result of the transmission auctions held in June and December 2023, in addition to the next auction taking place in 2024,” the ONS said.

In the analysis by state, the ONS highlighted that five states concentrate approximately 71% of future investments: Maranhão (9.9 billion reais), Goiás (8.5 billion), Minas Gerais (7.3 billion), Piauí (4.7 billion) and Bahia (4.6 billion).
