5th – Immersive 3.8/5

At the age of 20, the athlete Diana Nyad began to realize the craziest dream of her life: to swim from Cuba to Florida over a distance of more than 160 kilometers. He will attempt this crazy challenge five times before giving up. However, at the age of 60, he decided to try his luck again. After four years, he finally leaves…

Unsinkable is the true story of long-distance swimmer Diana Nyadi and the crazy challenge she embarked on in 2013. If the film has the characteristics of a classic sports biopic, it impresses above all with the performances of its two actors. Main characters, others. More natural than ever: Annette Bening, who plays the swimmer, and Jodie Foster, who plays her best friend and most loyal supporter. Both here bring to life women who simply refuse to give up. In the end, the film’s message is clear: it’s never too late to get over yourself. There is something inspired.

4 – The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die 3.8/5

The Last Kingdom is primarily a successful historical series from Netflix, inspired by literary series Saxon stories By Bernard Cornwell. Although the show ended at the end of its fifth season, the adaptation of the books continued (and ended) with a feature film that concluded the adventures of Uhtred Bebanburg.

In The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die, after the death of King Edward, Uhtred and his allies continue to fight their way through the broken kingdom, hoping to finally unite England.

Here we find everything that made the show a success: a heroic sense of adventure, amazing sets, costumes and visuals and, of course, its charismatic hero, now iconic. Alexander Dreymon returns for the last time in the precious shoes of Uhtred in this moving and epic conclusion that does justice to the series. If you are a fan, this is not to be missed.

3rd – The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar 3.8/5

Here, Wes Anderson adapts Roald Dahl’s famous story into a 37-minute medium-length film, a format that perfectly adapts and honors the story in question.

In the beautiful story of Henry Sugar, a rich man discovers the existence of a guru who can see without eyes and sets out to master this gift to cheat at a game.

And it’s a nugget full of creativity and ingenuity! Shot in 16mm, with the same color palette that makes the director so special, we also see his attention to detail for the shots moving around the actors, done and undone. Originality, novelty and theatricality are there, all delivered by Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Kingsley, Dev Patel and Richard Ayoade: the bet is won. You will devour this story like a life-size picture book.

2nd – Nimona 4.2/5

To clear his name, a knight accused of a heinous crime calls upon Nimona, a teenage form who may be the monster he’s sworn to destroy. The peculiarity of Nimona is that no one knows her true appearance, and her transformation as a young girl with pink hair is only one of many…

Despite the many problems encountered during production, Nimona finally saw the light of day this year and it’s a success! Adapted from the graphic novel of the same name by ND Stevenson, Nimona It is a fascinating portrait of adolescence. Nimona uses gender-neutral pronouns and is the first for a production of this scale to feature a non-binary protagonist – let alone an openly gay knight. Inventive, entertaining and humorous and above all profound, Nimona is a contemporary nugget by Nick Bruno and Troy Quan that conveys a message of tolerance that is rarely set aside.

1st – Deepest 4.3/5

As harrowing as it is heart-wrenching, this sensational documentary has captivated Netflix subscribers with its tragic true story and breathtaking images—literally.

Produced and directed by A24’s Laura McGann, Deep Down is a stunning film that follows the journey of Alessia Zecchini, an Italian freediving champion, and Stephen Keenan, her partner and safety expert diver, as they strive to succeed in the face of danger.

The documentary features a mix of real footage, archival footage and re-enactments to tell its story of this deadliest extreme sport. The photography is amazingly beautiful and the editing is excellent: everything conveys the authenticity of great emotional power. In the show, there is silence and a heartbeat in the depths of the oceans, which increases the tension and fear. It is disturbing and graceful at the same time: a marvel of emotion that must be discovered immediately.

Rankings are based on original movies released directly to Netflix in 2023 and with at least 200 ratings. Feel free to post your notes and reviews on the profiles of these movies (and others) and post your tops in the comments below!
