It’s not just the media that publishes year-end picks. For some time now, Barack Obama has been sharing his favorite books, music and movies on social media.
In terms of cinema, the former president of the United States has selected thirteen feature films for 2023. Before adding a fourteenth, announcing that he had seen and loved the musical version of The Color Purple, which hits our screens on January 24th.
Earlier this year, writers and actors went on strike to demand better working conditions and protections. This has led to significant changes that are transforming the industry for the better.

What is most remembered, on this side of the Atlantic, is not the existence of the three films produced by his company Higher Ground, founded in 2018, because of this bias. But Palme d’Or 2023: Anatomy of a Fall by Justin Triet.
A feature film that fails to represent France at the next Oscars, but continues to captivate the United States, and which we find alongside Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Innocence, and Winter Vacation, listed below, in alphabetical order (with French titles for some).
“I’m biased because these movies were made by Higher Ground, but they’re still the top three I’ve seen this year.”
- American Symphony (Available on Netflix)
- The World After Us (Available on Netflix)
- Rustin (Available on Netflix)
“My Other Favorite Movies of 2023”
