Harlan Coben returns to Netflix: After Intimidation and Innocence, is the new series worth watching?

What is it about?

When Maya, an ex-soldier, unexpectedly sees her husband on a spy camera, whom she thought was murdered, she discovers a murder plot rooted in the past.

is it worth watching

Harlan Coben and Netflix, it’s an ongoing thing. For his 7th collaboration with the streaming platform, the author returns with a new adaptation of one of his novels, Double Trap, which was released in 2016.

The American giant did not choose the date of January 1st to bring 8 episodes online. Subscribers have always responded to Harlan Coben’s series. The recent successes of Innocent (Spain side), Gone Forever (France side) and Intimidation (UK side) have confirmed this.

If Double Trap hasn’t yet reached the weekly top 10, it won’t be long. Because all the ingredients are there to keep the audience hooked: a gripping thriller, a mystery, and answers that are provided drop by drop until the final resolution.

This makes for an entertaining program that fills the days or evenings well during the holidays.

And it stops there. If Harlan Coben’s novels are always hits, it’s because the author knows how to handle his narrative, play with the audience, and deliver his information in a dramatic way. A quality that unfortunately we don’t see in his TV works.

If some stand out – like Innocent – Double Trap is a fairly average, classic and conventional thriller. We’ll be stuck until the end of episode 8 to get the final word.

The fault lies in the rather unconvincing casting – Michelle Keegan, Richard Armitage (who seems to be confined to the B series) and Adil Akhtar in the lead role – uninspired production and rather odd script choices (who are we to believe that the heroine is an ex-soldier?).

All that remains is the last episode, a rather short one, where the writers take a completely opposite view of Harlan Coben’s novel. The author himself kissed the shocking ending, we can still congratulate them for keeping their promises.

If Double Trap is successful, then we haven’t heard the last of Harlan Coben and Netflix.
