Neither Yellowstone nor its produced series is inspired by real stories. But this did not prevent the script performer Taylor Sheridan, inspired by authentic facts to write three programs. This is especially true by 1923, the first season of which has just arrived at Netflix.
This season 1 presents the character of Teonna Rainwater, which is located by Amina Nieevs. At the beginning of the series, a young woman was a resident of the Catholic Restoration Center. After several episodes of physical violence, Teona returned to freedom with the murder of several sisters and began launching in the south of the United States.
An unknown episode in American history
Unfortunately, these residential schools really existed. The practice of this time saw that the Amerdian children were released from their families to integrate these recovery centers. As in 1923, the residents of these institutions passed through the physical and psychological violence of their teachers to better “integrate” into American white culture.
In Montana, this type of one -time recovery center existed: it is Fort Shaw Indian School opened in 1891 and eventually closed in 1910. At the national level, about 200 of these centers were identified, especially in the southern states, generally more conservative than in the north.
When cinema tried to rewrite history
The 1923 series made it possible to light this unknown episode in American history. And remember the methods used by the authorities to remove Amerindan traditions and originality.
The Christian religion was imposed on the young residents of these centers and their birth names were replaced by new “white” names, such as the names of black slaves from Africa.
The first Westerners contributed greatly to the propaganda of this ethnic cleaning. By the end of the 1950s, the representation of the Amerinds in the cinema was not more nuanced.
Movies like a small big person and dancing with Kevin Costner wolves have particularly contributed to this policy of cinematic rehabilitation. By taking this unknown episode, the 1923 series is part of this public movement.
You can see the first season of 1923 on Netflix.
