According to the official statement released by Itamaraty, the Trade Representative Agency and the US State Department, Vieira, Rubio and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer discussed bilateral topics and trade issues. The parties agreed to establish a “joint working path” and launch new rounds of dialogue in the coming weeks.
The text also states that both governments intend to schedule a meeting between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and President Donald Trump “at the first possible opportunity”.
“During the meeting, a constructive attitude prevailed, focused on the practical aspects of the resumption of negotiations between the two countries, in line with the good chemistry and with what was decided, above all, in the recent phone call last week between President Lula and President Trump,” said the Brazilian Foreign Minister.
The meeting between Vieira and Rubio took place at the White House, at 3pm (Brasilia time), and lasted about an hour and a quarter. According to the Brazilian chancellor, who spoke to journalists after the meeting, the conversation was “very productive”. He said there was some alone time with Rubio, followed by an expanded discussion with White House advisers and representatives.
“I had a wonderful meeting with Secretary Rubio. It was a private conversation, very productive, followed by a larger meeting with White House trade representatives,” Mauro Vieira said at a news conference.
The dialogue comes after months of diplomatic tension between Brasilia and Washington, following the Trump administration’s decision to impose 50% tariffs on Brazilian products and to apply financial and consular sanctions to the country’s authorities, including Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court.
The expectation is that the meeting could take place during the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Malaysia at the end of October. However, as the Brazilian chancellor reported in an interview with journalists, the most appropriate time for the meeting must be established on the presidents’ agenda.
