Directed and written by Sonia Rolland, with the help of Fadette Drouard (Le Dindon) and Emmanuel Poulin-Arnaud (3615 Monique), an unexpected fate brings the young actress Esther Roland, seen in The Best and Lycée Toulouse-Lautrec. It stars young Nadia, a basketball lover, and a boy who is going to compete in her competition.
The father and mother are played by Thierry Godard (Engrenages) and Matta Gabin (Black as Snow). In turn, Clementine Cellarie lends her qualities to Dame Clochet, Genevieve de Fontaine’s co-worker.
Is it worth checking out?
It was on December 11, 1999, that Sonia Rolland, an 18-year-old young woman from Rwanda, received the coveted Miss France crown. She then became the first Miss of African descent to win this prestigious title.
Almost 24 years later, her ex, now an actress, has decided to step behind the camera to tell her story in “Unexpected Fate,” a heartwarming TV movie loosely inspired by her experience at the Miss France pageant.
Sonia Roland here gives way to Nadia, a somewhat helpless basketball player of Rwandan descent who joins a beauty pageant to please her father. Faced with physical dictates and racism, this teenager who was not destined to become her will have to overcome many challenges in hopes of making her parents proud.
Thanks to a well-crafted script, Unexpected Fate is a very enjoyable TV movie that highlights the complexities and sometimes dark reality of beauty pageants.
While some of the issues, such as the racism that Nadia and her family experience, are sometimes too superficial, this fiction remains disturbing and powerful.
As for the casting, Esther Rolland plays the role of Nadia/Sonya, her natural beauty and charisma shines through the screen. She also manages to effortlessly bring to life the doubts and questions the young woman faces throughout the pageant.
Thierry Godard is also excellent as a loving and brave father who is ready to sacrifice everything to support his daughter and thus bring back a smile to his wife who has struggled to find happiness since leaving for Rwanda.
In short, for the first time as a director and screenwriter, Sonia Rolland’s Unexpected Fate offers an honest and moving piece of fiction based on a remarkable cast.
