Tonight, the first episodes of the new TV series are aired on the Arte channel: Season of Aquarius. This six-episode German heirloom miniseries follows the slow descent into hell of the Schwartz clan, a wealthy industrial family.
Apparently, the Schwartzes reunited for the first time in years to celebrate the wedding of their youngest daughter, Emily. Surrounded by sisters Eva and Leo, the latter eagerly awaits the arrival of their brother, Felix. However, the atmosphere, initially cheerful, becomes more serious as old grudges resurface.
Indeed, Emily is still traumatized by her kidnapping 20 years earlier and only feels safe in her parents’ ultra-secure home. Felix, on the other hand, emigrated to Canada and hides that he is married and the father of a family.
Leo, a seemingly happy single mother, is desperate for a soulmate and harboring demons. As for Eve, she is fighting for motherhood, but above all for the recognition of her father.
When family patriarch Richard decides to appoint a newcomer as his successor, the Schwartz clan crumbles… Soon tensions arise and a repressed past comes to the surface.
Injured by the untold things accumulated over the years, the Schwartzes breed their differences, reopen old wounds, and gradually uncover an unresolved traumatic past.
Directed by Allen Gsponer from a script by Esther Bernstorff, Season of Aquarius is reminiscent of Succession, the HBO series that has been acclaimed by both the public and critics. Stephanie Reinsperger, Morgan Ferrow, Marilyn Rose, Sarah Mahita, Gotz Schubert, Julian Kohler and Aram Aram play the members of this dysfunctional family accurately.
In this drama, secrets and traumas intermingle and question everything this family has ever believed. If the theme of family reconciliation has already been seen, the script is still skillfully constructed and the suspense is quite effective.
