Unipac resumes production of green packaging

The company pioneered, in 2012, producing packaging with Braskem’s I’m green™ bio-based resin (HDPE); The goal now is to expand the portfolio across all its operating segments

Unipac, a company that operates in the polymer transformation sector, producing packaging for the agri-food segment, resumes the production of green rigid packaging (HDPE I’m green™ bio-based by Braskem). Such packaging is produced from raw material made from sugarcane-derived ethanol, which captures COtwo of the atmosphere.

In this way, ethanol replaces, partially or completely, the petroleum usually used in the composition of packaging, helping to reduce dependence on non-renewable resources and playing an important role in mitigating climate change.

This replacement also allows a reduction in the “carbon footprint”, which evaluates the environmental impact of human activities in relation to climate change, helping to identify where the greatest contributions to greenhouse gas emissions occur and allowing the adoption of strategies to reduce them.

“With this recovery we have expanded our portfolio of products with reduced environmental impact, serving not only the agri-food segment, but also the automotive, logistics, food and electric vehicle segments”, says Mauro Fernandes, Commercial Director of Unipac . “Additionally, we are committed to research and innovation, anticipating new eco-friendly products to arrive as we look to further expand our sustainable options.”

Another advantage highlighted by Fernandes is the fact that this packaging can be produced and recycled in the same way as conventional packaging, completing its life cycle in an environmentally sustainable way.

“Unipac is committed to strengthening the production chain in a more sustainable way, offering solutions that combine high performance and environmental responsibility. The company seeks not only to meet customer demands, but also to take action to mitigate climate change,” he emphasizes André Silvestre, Sales Manager of the Packaging Sector at Unipac.

Unipac had already been a pioneer, in 2012, producing packaging with Braskem’s I’m green™ bio-based resin (HDPE). In August 2023, the company resumed this journey, reintroducing this packaging to the market.

With the production of 1 million packs in 2023, distributed between 5 and 20 litres, and the agreements already signed which provide for the doubling of the volume produced in 2024, Unipac’s objective is to achieve a leading role in the supply of these packaging to the agri-food segment.
