Minecraft is a global phenomenon. In October 2023, the block game reached the mark of 300 million units sold worldwide. As a result, it became the second best-selling game in history, behind only Tetris.
Officially launched in 2011, Minecraft currently has nearly 140 million monthly active players. Not to mention the legion of fans of this addictive format.
With so many positive credentials, Hollywood has taken an interest in the brand – and not recently. The adaptation has been in development since 2014.
Since then there have been some postponements and 3 changes of administration up to the current one; Shawn Levy, Rob McElhenney and Peter Sollett participated in the project. The person currently managing the initiative is Jared Hess (“Nacho Libre” and “Napoleon Dynamite”).
And, apparently, this time the film will really take off.
Cast
The name of Jason Momoa (“Aquaman” and “GOT”) has been linked to the project for two years. The big news now is the arrival of Jack Black (“School of Rock”), who will play the character of Steve.
Black, in fact, successfully voiced director Jared Hess in “Nacho Libre” (yes, I liked the movie), and now they will do it again.
Information about the actor was initially leaked by the website Deadline and he confirmed it hours later on social media.
The cast also includes Emma Myers (“Wandinha”), Danielle Brooks (“Orange is the new black”) and Sebastian Eugene Hansen (“LOVE – Lisey’s Story”).
The plot of the film remains secret, as do the screenwriters, who have not yet been confirmed.
Production is expected to begin by March in New Zealand and is scheduled to premiere on April 4, 2025.
