Are you a fan of good old-fashioned westerns? Do you love John Wayne, one of the stars of the genre, the star of such classics as Rio Grande, Prisoner of the Desert or Rio Bravo?
Very good news: the Arte channel has a great idea to air the excellent The Four Sons of Katie Elder this Monday night, in which the American actress is featured.
The 1965 feature film, directed by Henry Hathaway, the great Western specialist, immerses the audience in Texas at the end of the 19th century. Kathy Elder dies in poverty. At his funeral, his sons discover that the family ranch has been lost in a gambling game rigged by their father, right before the latter is killed. The brothers will carry out the investigation together.
Kathy Elder’s Four Sons, a classic and highly effective western, marks a new collaboration between the two. John Wayne and Henry Hathaway. The two men worked together on seven films, including 100 Dollars for the Sheriff, for which the actor won an Oscar in 1969, the only one of his illustrious career.
Katie Elder’s four sons, whom he photographed shortly after lung cancer surgery, Wayne reunited with Dean Martin seven years later. Rio Bravo. It should also be noted that the film is an opportunity to discover a very young Dennis Hopper on screen and that the music is by the great Elmer Bernstein (Seven Mercenaries, The Comanchers, The Great Escape).
So many elements that make this very good, unfairly overlooked film worthy of a second look.
Tonight at Arte at 20:55.
