Zema renounces the January 8 appointment after confirming his presence at the last minute and coming under pressure

After putting the event on the agenda, the governor of Minas Gerais was advised against it by the leaders of the Novo Party and was excluded from the ceremony which commemorated the attacks on the Powers

The governor of Minas Gerais, Romeo Zema (New), did not attend the event marking one year since the January 8 coup. On the morning of this Monday 8 he confirmed his presence at the “Unshaken Democracy” ceremony promoted by the government Lula (PT), the Federal Court of Justice (STF) and the National Congress.

The Minas Gerais native will be the only major opposition governor to attend. However, Novo leaders pressured Zema to change his mind. The assessment is that the presence of the governor of Minas Gerais would have a negative impact on the former president’s voters Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and to the right. The recall information was confirmed by Estadao both in the party and in the government.

“Zema will not go to the party of the Overt Dictatorship of Lula and Moraes,” wrote the federal deputy Marcel van Hattem (Novo-RS), from the same party as the governor, on X (formerly Twitter). The report asked for an official position from the government of Minas Gerais, but has not yet received a response. The appointment was still on Zema’s official diary at 4.03pm.

Despite canceling the commitment, Zema will meet this Monday with the secretary of the national treasury, Rogerio Ceronto discuss the proposal to renegotiate Minas Gerais’s debt with the Union. Without political articulation with Lula, the governor saw the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), take the reins of the negotiation and receive a nod from the President of the Republic.

In the morning, practically at the same time as he confirmed that he would be present at the event together with Lula, Pacheco and the president of the STF, Luis Roberto Barroso, Zema posted a message on social media teasing the date. “Today is 08/01, do you know what this means?”, the governor wrote to “Qualification + employment: a social policy that works and does not imprison”, he concluded.

Opposition governors will also not attend the event. The governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha (MDB), removed from his duties after the January 8 attacks by the STF minister Alexander of Moraes, said he was on vacation. The governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas (Republicans), Bolsonaro’s former minister, is in Europe.

The governor of Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello (PL) and the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro (PL), have not confirmed their presence. The governor of Paraná, Mouse Junior (PSD), sent a letter to Lula thanking him for the invitation and specifying that he will not be able to participate due to “commitments already made”.
