The boy and the cranenew animation by Hayao Miyazaki (Chihiro’s journey), surprised many people by winning the award for best animated film at the last Golden Globes, which took place on January 7 in Los Angeles. With the release scheduled for March in Brazilian cinemas, many still don’t know exactly what the new animation is about.

The film had a very unusual release, having been announced by Studio Ghibli, but without revealing any posters, images or trailers. Until opening weekend in Japan in July 2023, people didn’t even know what the movie would be about. The only information was the title and the fact that it could be the last work of Miyazaki, the legendary director who created classics such as my neighbor Totoro AND Princess Mononoke.

But what is the story of The Boy and the Crane?

Inspired by a book titled How do you liveby the Japanese author Genzaburo Yoshino, The boy and the crane revolves around a 15-year-old boy named Mahito who goes on a fantasy journey about spiritual growth, poverty, life and death.

Although he used the book as the basis for the ideas he wanted to explore, Miyazaki crafted the film as a semi-autobiographical work with fantastical overtones. The young Mahito would like to meet his mother again and sets off on an adventure in a reality that lies between the world of the living and that of the dead.

There he is confronted with ideas about existence and the purpose of his life. He ends up using his uncle’s diary to guide him through his advice, which helps him better understand how the world works. All this with the magic touch of Studio Ghibli and high-quality hand-drawn animation.

Will The Boy and the Crane be Miyazaki’s last film?

Much was said before the release of The boy and the crane which would be the last work of Hayao Miyazaki, who would retire after its arrival in theaters. However, in September, during the cartoon’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Studio Ghibli vice president Junichi Nishioka revealed that the cartoon will no longer represent Miyazaki’s farewell.

According to Nishioka, Miyazaki should simply step away from animation, but continues to write and come up with new ideas for the studio. The director, who is already 83 years old, may not direct a new film, but he should continue to contribute to the growth of Studio Ghibli for a few more years.

The boy and the crane arrives in Brazilian cinemas through the Sato company, at the end of February and March.
